BUGATTI Type 30   1926

Carrosserie LAVOCAT & MARSAUD - Châssis 4724 - Moteur 277
The T.30 have a special place in Bugatti’s history. Ettore Bugatti was looking for a way to both improve the cars’ performances and to expand the brand’s offer. To do so, E.Bugatti worked for a while on 8 cylinder engines. After the creation of different models that knew a variety of outcomes (Brescia DOUBLE QUATRE, type 28), the final model will be a 2L engine that meets Grand Prix requirements. The engine will be used on a 2m55 chassis that entered the Strasbourg Grand Prix of 1922 (Type 29/30) and will even be used on a single-seater that entered the 1923 Indianapolis 500.
A sport model, the type 30, was also sold at that time. It was built on a stretched 2m85 type 23 chassis. This model will be produced at 600. Some cars were given bodies created by some of the greatest coach-builders of the era who were under this beautiful chassis’ spell. The type 30 is, before all, the very first Bugatti equipped with an 8 cylinder engine. Furthermore, the engine will be used as the basis for “the” Bugatti: the Type 35.

4724, the object of our study, is a 1923 chassis, with a “Lavocat & Marsaud” body of 1925. This car was delivered new to Charavel, best known as “Sabipa” in Paris. It was then sent to South America, presumably among three other cars, one of them being a type 30 and the last two being “Grand Prix”. The cars were given in care of Antoine de Saint Exupery, who was then station manager in Buenos Aires. Later found in a very bad shape with the other type 30, 4724 will be deemed “savable” and then restored. After a stay in England and Australia, it came back to France where it is permanently exposed in the 24 Hours of le Mans museum.

Creation entirely designed and made at my workshop in France.
